Insomnia and Medical Marijuana

One of the top 3 requests from patients when looking for medical marijuana recommendations? “I need to sleep.” Medical marijuana often comes with an “in the couch” connotation. Although there are products that will aid in falling asleep, others will do the complete opposite. Since no one has time for that, follow Stan the Pharmacist’s recommendations below!

Cannabinoids

THC

Low doses are often more effective than high doses because they can result in overstimulation of the mind (you can always use more). THC has the potential to cause sedation, relieve pain, reduce muscle spasms, and relieve nausea.

CBD

Low doses are often more stimulating, so high doses for sleep are the recommendation! Cannabidiol has the potential to reset a person’s sleep schedule, reduce inflammation, relieve pain, cause sedation, and relieve anxiety and depressive symptoms.

CBN

Works best in combination with THC or CBD (creating the entourage effect). CBN has the potential to relieve pain and inflammation.

CBG

Works best in combination with THC or CBD (creating the entourage effect). CBG has the potential to relieve pain and inflammation, anxiety and depression, and muscle stiffness.

CBC

Works Best in combination with THC or CBD (creating the entourage effect). CBC has the potential to relieve pain, inflammation, and depression.

Terpenes

Caryophyllene

Caryophyllene, a pseudo cannabinoid, hast he potential to relieve pain and inflammation, anxiety and depression, and aid in sedation when working with other terpenes. This terpene is derived from pepper.

Myrcene

Myrcene has the potential to induce sedation and relieve muscle spasms, anxiety, and depression. This terpene is derived from mangoes.

Linalool

Linalool has the potential to induce sedation, relieve anxiety, and cause relaxation. This terpene is derived from lavender.

Limonene

Limonene has the potential to relieve stress, boost serotonin levels, and relieve inflammation.

Alpha pinene

Alpha pinene hast he potential to reduce the amount of time it takes to fall asleep.

Usage

Short term use is more effective than long term use (meaning the longer you haven’t medicated, the stronger the effects will be when you do.) It is recommended to use products meant for sleep up to an hour before laying down.
